ECOLOGICAL LISTENING
Locative Media and Sound Mapping workshop
/ Linda O'Keeffe

This workshop will invite participants into the practice of environmental listening through mediated sound walks and sound mapping activities. Artist Linda O'Keeffe will guide you through ideas surrounding locative media and promote awareness of perception, distance, connection and fragmentation. Day 1 we will involve conducting a mediated sound walk through our local environments. On day 2 we will explore mapping our soundscapes through collective, shared activity.

Linda O'Keeffe has worked for over two decades as an artist, and has been commissioned to create a number of art works for solo, group and public exhibition. In the past decade she has developed a number of long term multi-disciplinary projects, which have involved the creation of new practice led methodologies. Her most recent body of work, Hybrid Soundscapes, has included a 3 year commissioned touring exhibition, and the release of an album of sonic art works, Silent Spring.

ACTIVE LISTENING / Martyna Poznańska

In this listening workshop I invite you to focus on your perceptual notion of the world and how it can be modified through attentiveness. Our work will be based on the contemplation of the sonic environment, a pleasure of being present and weaving creative entanglements with the surroundings, while taking a multisensorial, active and corporeal path. Our senses work together incessantly, but often enough some are stimulated stronger than the others. Therefore, at times we are more sensitive towards auditory stimuli, visual or olfactory ones, etc. During the workshops I would like to offer sets of exercises to play with our perception, enhancing some senses over the others, searching for child like curiosity and openness toward the environment and ways to become closer with it. You are invited to embark on a listening journey through your own familiar surroundings starting from the intimate environment such as your own body, your bedroom, home, etc. toward the outside neighbourhood and places you might be intuitively attracted to.

Martyna Poznańska is an interdisciplinary artist who works with different media across genres. This includes the practice of active listening and field recording in tangent to working with various visual tools such as video, installation, her own body, and drawing, as well as listening workshops and soundwalks. Responding to the climate crises related issues, she has been exploring the symbiotic relations between human and non-human beings, the endless entanglements between us and how to acknowledge their intrinsic character. She has exhibited and performed internationally in shows at the Akademie der Künste, Berlin (DE), Unsound Festival Krakow (PL), Arsenal Gallery Bialystok (PL), SPOR Festival (DK), Aperto Raum Berlin, Allgemeine Konsumverein Braunschweig (DE). In addition, she has worked with renowned artists such as Hans Peter Kuhn (Übergang, Martin-Gropius- Bau Museum, Berlin, 2017), and Peter Cusack (There Will Be No Other Forest). In 2013 she was a recipient of a grant from the Polish Ministry of Culture, and in 2018 she was awarded a scholarship from the Berlin Senatsverwaltung fuür Kultur und Europa. Martyna completed a master's degree in Spanish Language and Literature at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, 2010. She studied Sound Art at the University of the Arts, London (LCC/UAL). In 2016 she obtained an MA in Sound Studies at the Universität der Künste Berlin (UdK). Martyna currently lives and works in Bialystok and Berlin.
